Pediatric major burns: a monocentric retrospective review of etiology and outcomes (2008–2020)

Abstract Background Burns are one of the most common causes mortality and morbidity among children. This study aims to assess epidemiology pediatric major burns in a third level hospital Spain evaluate demographics, etiology, outcomes. Methods A retrospective was held by Plastic, Reconstructive Burn Surgery department hospital. We included 147 patients under 18 admitted between January 2008 December 2020 who meet inclusion criteria: partial thickness > 10% total body surface area (TBSA) < years old. Clinical data extracted age, gender, date admission, %TBSA, burn types, severity sites burn, length stay, ventilator support, intensive care blood transfusion, surgical interventions, complications. Results Three groups age were analyzed. The average %TBSA 18.7 (SE 0.9). Scalds main mechanism injury (70.1%) upper extremity frequent location affected (68%). 28.6% suffered some complication, but rate low (0.7%). In our series, group aged 13–18 showed significantly higher more number surgeries transfusions. Conclusions Scald burns. However, teenagers suffer severe complications, usually caused flame. Despite rates, measures prevention should be taken increase children security. Level evidence: IV, Risk/Prognostic.
